The Filoli Estate, Host to Biden and Xi, Has Hollywood History The New York Times

She told us what we would see inside, and what to look for. On this day they had an exhibition of 1920’s clothes which could be found in almost every room. The first room to see after entering the house is the Reception Hall. We exited the house and took a last look at the reflecting pool. Walking through the gardens with very few people present gave us an air of tranquility. Shops, hotels, restaurants and points of interest for the home and garden obsessed on the go.

The history of Filoli

In 1975, she donated the estate to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and established an endowment to maintain the gardens in perpetuity. Although she had by then moved to a smaller property nearby, she returned many weekends to wander the estate’s brick walkways and leafy allĂ©es punctuated by rustic wooden benches. “She would bring sweet rolls to the gardeners and walk her dogs,” says Coonan.

Most mornings he would ask to be pushed to a point at the top of the garden that commanded a panoramic view of landscaped beds, pastureland and, in the distance, Crystal Springs Lake. Agnes had preceded him in death six months earlier at age 75. Their daughter, Maud Bourn Vincent, had already succumbed, at age 45, to pneumonia, contracted during a transatlantic voyage from Europe to the United States. Lurline Roth gifts 125 acres, including the House and formal garden, to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Filoli Estate and Nature Lands boast a variety of ecosystems within a compact area, including oak-madrone forests, redwood groves, and chaparral.

Now, back at the entrance, it was time to take a quick tour of the 54,000+ square foot. Including 17 fireplaces, 15 bathrooms, 14 staff bedrooms and 10 family bedrooms. Fortunately, the self-guided tour only takes you to a relatively small number of rooms. After their deaths, the 654-acre estate was sold to William and Lurline Roth, who continued to expand the gardens. Lurline was a particular fan of camellias – she was crazy for camellias, Salyards says – and a large variety of the shrubs can be found throughout the formal gardens. Near the estate swimming pool stands a Camperdown elm planted decades ago.

The 18th century Georgian style, consistent with the houses’ architecture, is represented in the more naturalistic terraces and outer landscape, where the human hand on the land was intended to blend into the existing environment. When I recently toured Filoli in Woodside, CA, this Merchant and Ivory feeling came over me. Though tempted, I didn’t frolic on the lawn, but I did take time to marvel at the pretty colors and tidy shapes and lines, all in concert with the natural oak-studded surroundings.

It’s one of the most gorgeous spots on the entire property and can be viewed from either end (but you cannot walk on the grass as it’s roped off). Filoli is open later on Thursday nights throughout the summer and you can visit by reserving the special “Summer Nights” tickets. From 5-8pm, you can explore the garden, grab a bite at a food truck, or grab a drink at the Hummingbird Bar.

In 1975 Mrs. Roth donated the place to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The mansion was built between 1915 and 1917 to be a home for the Bourn family. William Bowers Bourn II spent a lot of time in Europe and was fascinated by the architecture over there. He brought his ideas with him and used them on this mansion. Filoli is a popular place for day visits and outdoor walks, and even some artists working. They also have a handful of nice events and it is used as a wedding venue.

On Sunday afternoons through September 26, performers will take to Filoli’s birch- and dogwood-shaded outdoor stage. Another jewel of the property, the Sunken Garden is filled with water lilies and flanked by dramatic flower beds, and it sparkles just as brightly in the sun of the warmer months as it does on winter holiday evenings. Sitting in deck chairs under the glass awning among potted flower displays in front of the glamorous pool, my mother and I have passed many a leisurely afternoon.

Although it seemed safer from earthquakes than in The City, the Bourn family constructed their house only 200 yards away from the San Andreas fault. The formal gardens blend two English garden styles — 18th-century Georgian gardens and the more formal English Renaissance style — and were completed in 1929. Passing through the rainbow gradient of blooms in the Rose Garden, I milled around peacefully, letting the sun warm my face and the wind blow the hem of my dress around my ankles.

Not only are the cherry trees blooming, but also the colourful daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and blue violas are at their best. Filoli is a historical estate with 16 acres of amazingly beautiful gardens open to the public. It is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and ran and maintained by its staff with some 1,200 volunteers.

These tickets must be purchased in advance, even if you are already a member. My favorite thing about visiting in summer is the rose garden! Spring is by far the most popular season to visit Filoli, which means insane crowds — especially on weekends. It’s peak flower-blooming season, the weather is lovely, and everything just feels right in the world. We envision a time when all people honor nature, value unique experiences and appreciate beauty in everyday life.

Local community groups take part in nature and historical education programs on-site, too. The estate stayed open for much of the pandemic, with adjusted procedures in line with state and local guidelines; the county recently lifted its indoor mask mandate for vaccinated guests, but masks are still required for unvaccinated visitors. The Roths, Salyards says, wanted the estate to be a place of horticulture significance, where people could visit and learn about the astounding aspects of nature.

The walled garden consists of a series of enclosures, including the stained glass window design outlined in clipped box. The most expensive time to visit is during the winter when the house and gardens are decked out for the holidays. The formal gardens include several areas, including the Wedding Place, named for Berenice Roth's wedding location in 1941. Lurline and Berenice both had their wedding receptions at Filoli, but Berenice's wedding is the only one that has ever taken place at Filoli when it was a private home.

Many families were out for Mother’s Day, including mine, and the bright colors and unhurried atmosphere made everything feel lighter. Filoli, Woodside’s historic estate has long been a holiday lights destination. But the grounds are simply spectacular, with 16 acres of formal gardens, 250 fruit trees, a vegetable garden and a daffodil meadow planted with more than 75,000 spring bulbs. Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is nestled on a slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains and surrounded by more than 23,000 acres of the protected Peninsula watershed. To the two families who lived here, Filoli represented a desire to create a magnificent and enduring country estate. Today, Filoli’s mission is to connect our rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature, and shared stories.

“We were very focused on the two families who lived in the homes, and those stories are great, but there’s so many more stories here,” Newport said. In a landscape that provides so much beauty, it’s easy to be overtaken by the glory spread out before you, but Filoli is a place to take your time, do some exploring and look for the details that make the difference. Outdoor adventures abound in the Bay Area, where 10,000 miles of trails wander across more than 300 mountains, 19 state parks, eight national park units — and one very civilized, almost-Gilded Age garden.
